Arcana

Arcana (SNES)

"Arcana" for the SNES is a bit of a weird one. I was trying to find some hidden gems on the SNES. Games that aren't really talked about too much, or some cult classics. Eventually I stumbled upon "Arcana", a game by "HAL Laboratory". The same "HAL Laboratory" that made Kirby, the Mother series, and of course, Super Smash Bros. Naturally I decided to take a look.

"Arcana" is a first-person party-based dungeon crawler, think "Etrian Odyssey", "Wizardry", or the original "Megami Tensei". It's a typical JRPG with a pretty good soundtrack. The main gimmick of the game is that all of the sprites are represented by cards. You'd be forgiven for not even noticing that, but it is mentioned in game. I really couldn't tell you anything about the plot or the characters. The game is pretty grindy as well, so it's not for everyone.

Despite the my gripes with the game, it's beloved. While writing this up, I discovered a ROM hack that serves to fix several issues. This hack aims to speed up gameplay, provide a better translation of the game, while removing censorship, a better map, bug fixes, and several other improvements. This is probably the definitive way to play the game and I'll probably restart my playthrough so I can check out this hack.
